Jaron Lanier (1960- )

Dreadlocked and blue-eyed eclectic musician, artist, and computer programmer who dropped out of school at age 14, but enrolled in graduate level math classes thereafter. Lanier was raised in a remote corner of New Mexico. He coined the term "virtual reality" and founded his own company, VPL (Virtual Programming Languages) when he was twenty-four. His response to the likes of Bill Joy and K. Eric Drexler, the current state of computer software, and the culture of science and technology is reflected in his manifesto:
